STOP! LOOK! LISTEN! – What Your Social Media Strategy Could Be Missing

There are several components in building yourself a social media strategy, some of which we are more than familiar with.  In fact most of us could be guilty of placing too much emphasis on our content creation.  Yes, it is without doubt an important ingredient in using social media and many of us still regard content as ‘King’.

Many businesses make this same mistake; putting an emphasis on creating content and using social media to give themselves a voice.

Let’s just stop for a second and think about the way we communicate, as people.  We speak. We look. And we listen.

Ok, now give ourselves a Twitter, Instagram, G+ and LinkedIn account and how do we communicate now…?  We speak.  We speak again.  And maybe a little more.  It’s almost as though some of us have ear-plugs and a blindfold. Sometimes it’s just one-way traffic!

Shouldn’t Social Media be, not only a voice, but, our eyes and ears as well?

Here are just a few ways in which your business should look and listen using social media:

  • Analyze how you share your content – Look at the analytics of your social networks to gauge where you are getting better engagement and make adjustments to your strategy accordingly.
  • Listen to your target audience and engage with them
  • Monitor conversations – Find out what people are saying, whether it’s about your brand or your competitors, but also what’s going on in your industry.
  • Answer enquiries – Try not to leave people waiting when they ask a question. Respond as early as you can, even if that is to acknowledge their question.
  • Manage Negative Comments - Living in a fast world people expect a fast response. Failure to give a timely response will only fuel the fire of complaints (there’s nothing worse than a Twitter rant!) and if required you should attempt to take responses offline.
  • Respond to Praise - Always acknowledge those who have shared your content, but probably more importantly thank anyone responding to you and your posts with compliments or giving added value.

Is it time for you to STOP and think about your social strategy, LOOK out for what people are talking about and LISTEN to what your audience wants.

Don’t let Social Media be just a voice; make it your eyes and ears as well.
