Sometimes we don’t always get the right advice from Social Media experts.  In fact some of what these gurus offer I’d probably class as a bit of a pork pie.  Maybe it’s not intentional; maybe just incompetence.

Here are three common misconceptions often fuelled by the mouths of Social Media experts...

Social Media is Free

Well that’s sort of true… it is free to use, but not necessarily free to manage, and manage well.

Just how should we quantify the word ‘free’?  If it costs you money, takes up your time or needs you to call in a favour then IT’S NOT FREE!!!!  In truth it is near on impossible to build any kind of successful social media marketing campaign without paying in some way, shape or form.

Managing your social media accounts can become expensive, although many businesses still believe there isn’t a great deal to just pumping out the posts.  In reality the best social media managers are exactly that… Managers! (More than one).  Usually a team of differing expertise and skills made up of designers, analytics and data geeks, writers with differing styles and tones, strategic planners and visual content creators.

Increasing  Your Followers Equals Success

Yes, you need an audience.  But celebrating having reached 10k followers on Twitter, when the majority of them really don’t fit that ideal customer profile you imagined when you first built your strategy, probably isn’t an achievement worth popping open the prosecco.

Although some view social media as inbound marketing, many of your fans or followers could just as well be what would otherwise form part of the uninterested audience when you’re shouting at the masses.  Followers isn’t success.  Just as Reach isn’t success.

Building followers is not the goal. Increasing your revenue should be your goal. Finding the right audience isn’t success but you’re heading in the right direction.

You SHOULD be Using This New Social Network!

Quite often when a new social network comes along there is a sudden familiar theme with many blogs by wannabe social gurus spouting about a hundred different reasons why YOUR business should be using this spanking new platform and how it will transform your business.  Really?

You should understand which networks are being used by your audience and which are most effective for you and your business.
